Hungry monkey scours rubbish bin for food

Hungry monkey scours rubbish bin for food
This hungry monkey is determined to find a good meal from this bin. STOMPer Jasmine caught sight of it scouring anxiously for food at a bus stop’s rubbish bin.

She tells STOMP:

"I saw this hungry monkey finding food to eat by digging out rubbish from the bin and testing to see if they were edible.

"Those that he did not fancy, he would throw them on the floor causing the mess.

"He did not seem to be afraid when people were looking at him, he simply minded his own business.

I wonder if the long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) we see scavenging from our rubbish bins are doing so because they have been fed by people before. It is also possible that a wild monkey might have started rummaging through the trash out of curiosity, only to find some tasty scrap, without having been taught to directly associate humans with food.

In any case, it would be a good idea to install more monkey-proof bins in and around our nature areas.
